ABRAHAM HERSHEL, "HERSH", 82, of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, beloved husband and father, retired business owner, died after a long illness on Monday, September 3, 2012. Hersh was devoted to his wife Charlotte for 58 years and to his children Steve Muchnick, Lisa Muchnick Pote, Tessa Muchnick Teeter (Dr. John), and Mindy Muchnick Oppenheimer (David). He enjoyed close and loving relationships with his grand-children Benjamin, Max, Mollie, Rebecca, Aaron, Natalie, Hannah, Jenna, Rachel and Matthew. His memory will be cherished by his family, business associates and many friends in the community.
Hersh's life was a tale of two cities. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., he attended Wilson High School and George Washington University. He received a degree in Business Administration after serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserve during the Korean War. Following his graduation from GWU, and along with his father Joseph and brother-in-law Mervin Lewis, Hersh founded the Tak-A-Toy Corp., which became a national toy distributorship. After the sale of Tak-A-Toy to the Larami Corp. in 1991, Hersh moved to Philadelphia and continued to manage Tak-A-Toy until his retirement in 1994.
Hersh was a life-long inspirational leader in both Washington and Philadelphia. His positive outlook and knowledge of the good in all people shaped his relationships in his business, within his family and in the larger community. Hersh was a long-time supporter both of the State of Israel and of Jewish-American causes. In Washington, Hersh was active in the Adas Israel Congregation over many years, serving on numerous committees, and as Executive Vice-President and Board member. In both Washington and at Har Zion Temple in Philadelphia, he was a steadfast supporter and leader in the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs, receiving many leadership awards including the Ma'asim Tovim (good deeds) Award and the Regional Men's Club Man of the Year award. Hersh also contributed to the community at large by volunteering at the Philadelphia Orchestra, to Meals on Wheels and to the Democratic Party.
Funeral services will be held on September 5th 1 P.M. at Adas Israel Congregation in Washington D.C. The family will observe Shiva at the residence of Mindy and David Oppenheimer in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. Contributions in Hersh's memory may be made to the Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation,
