Barbara Clarke

1954 — January 1, 2020

Barbara Maxine Clarke (nee Stern), 66, passed away on August 27, 2020 at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, PA. Barbara is survived by beloved daughter Michelle Edwards (Jonathan); cherished grandchildren Declan and Zoe Edwards, her siblings Faith Wind (Sheldon) of Florida and Richard Stern (Judith) of Virginia, and husband Steven Clarke. Born May 26, 1954 in Washington DC, Barbara was the daughter of the late Irving and Janet Stern. She was raised and educated in Silver Spring, MD. She obtained a BA in Early Childhood Education at the University of Maryland and an MS in Library & Information Science at Drexel University.
Barbara lived in Newtown Square, PA for many years before moving to Glen Mills, PA. Barbara was a loving family member and good friend to many; she enjoyed being with her cats, reading, and attending the theater. As a young adult, Barbara was an avid hiker and enjoyed spelunking and international folk dancing. She worked as head librarian at Berean Institute in Philadelphia before being disabled by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at the age of 32. Barbara was a very active member of Temple Sholom in Broomall, serving for a time as sisterhood president, and for many years as the Temple Sholom librarian. She was also very involved with the S'myelin MS support group in West Chester PA, and was the S'myelin MS Walk Team Captain for many years. Barbara enjoyed the adaptive sports of cycling and rowing, competing twice in the Bayada Regata. Later in life, Barbara was stricken with multiple cancers, which contributed to her death at too young an age. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the National MS Society (www.nationalmssociety.org).
