BEHREND
BERNARD, M.D., 95 former Medical Director at The Philadelphia Inquirer died Tues., March 2, 2004, of congestive heart failure at Hahnemann Univ. Hospital. Dr. Behrend served as Medical Director from the mid 1950's through early 1960's. Dr. Behrend was one of the first physicians in Phila. to pass Certifying Boards in Occupational Medicine in 1958. Originally training for internal medicine and surgery, he chose occupational medicine after contracting tuberculosis while giving physical exams to soldiers during World War II. Besides The Philadelphia Inquirer, Dr. Behrend was Director of Occupational Health for 14 years at Smith, Kline, & French, now Glaxo Smith Kline, and held a similar position for many years at Louis Goldsmith Co., leading men's clothing manufacturer in the city. Dr. Behrend was also emeritus Associate Professor of Occupational Medicine at Medical College of Penna., active member of the Phila. College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Board Member of the Visiting Nurse Assoc. of Phila. for many years. He was also an Honorary Vice President of Con-gregation Rodeph Shalom, and was a Board member for over 30 years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rose Susan (Hirschhorn) Behrend; sons, David Behrend of Bryn Mawr, Daniel Behrend of Phila.; daughter, Catherine Behrend of New York City; also survived by sister, Sara Weinberg; grandchildren, Robert Behrend, Andrew Behrend, Benjamin Behrend, Sophie Behrend; and father-in-law to Dona Behrend and Susan W. Behrend; great uncle to Alan and David Guggenheim. Services will be held at Congregation Rodeph Shalom, 615 N. Broad St., Phila., on Thurs., March 4th, at 2 P.M. The family will receive visitors at The Wellington, 135 S. 19th St., Apt. 1210 on Thurs., March 4th, from 5 to 7 P.M. and Fri., March 5th, 4 to 7 P.M. Private Interment.
