Betty Matusow Perlmutter passed away on June 23, 2024, shortly after celebrating her 100th birthday.
Born at home in Germantown on April 5, 1924 to the late Ida Richman and Harry Matusow, she was predeceased by her siblings Benjamin (the late Clare) and Naomi Druckman (the late Leon) and survived by siblings Josh Matusow (Linda Weiss) and Rene Presser (the late Marvin).
Betty married Jack Perlmutter in 1949. The love affair lasted until his death in 2004. A beloved son Lee Perlmutter (Kathy) passed away in 2020. Betty's legacies are her daughter Harriet Zilber (Sidney) and her precious grandchildren Emily Zilber (Alex Reusing), Benjamin Zilber (Annabella), Rachel Zilber (Pete Beck), Jonathan Zilber (Desiree Casimiro), Michael Permutter (Melissa) and Allie Richards (Ryan). Her crowning glories are her great-grandchildren Maia Zilber-Reusing, Juliana Zilber-Reusing, Louis Zilber, Juliam Zilber, Garret Beck, Savannah Perlmutter and Jack Perlmutter.
Betty approached life with curiosity and vigor. She met physical or emotional adversity with wisdom, resilience, and strength reframing problems with a core value of gratitude. Her strong will and tenacity contributed to her living independently until early April of this year. Betty had an amazing capacity to find, express and share joy. An innate curiosity made her interested in everything and everyone. A voracious reader, she participated in book clubs, discussion groups and creative activities that were most exciting when there was something new to learn. A true Philadelphia sports fan, Betty would stay up late for the end of the game, offering bits of advice or encouragement through the television screen. A life long volunteer, Betty committed to being of service whether it was knocking on someone's door to see if they were alright or knitting caps and blankets for babies in hospitals. Betty accumulated many admirers with her caring nature, quick wit and unflappable memory. The fuel which shined so brightly was supplied in huge amounts by the devotion and love of her family, friends and neighbors, as well as her very special health care providers who embraced her with extraordinary attention.
In a parting message, Betty shared "I have done it all and had such fun...I lived a lifetime of love". She asked that those wishing to remember her to "do something nice for someone else" and "enjoy a piece of chocolate cake".
