Charles Swartz, age 94. A life well lived should be celebrated and not mourned. When we reflect on the life of our Father, Grandfather, Uncle and Friend, we remember Charles J. Swartz as a man who worked hard and enjoyed his life.
Born in rural Pennsylvania in January 1932, to Aaron and Sarah, Charles spent his formative years surrounded by family and dogs, learning in a one room school house where his mother was the teacher. A move to Baltimore expanded his world, and was also where he met his true love Rita. They married in secret at 18 and then on TV a year later on "Bride and Groom," never telling their parents about the secret wedding. They worked hard, first to get Rita her nursing degree and then for Charles to go to college. He earned a PHD in Pharmacology in 1956. The couple welcomed Wendy Susan in 1960 and Scott Lewis five years later. They grew their family first in Springfield and then Connecticut.
Charles worked for several pharmaceutical companies, always leading and encouraging his staff. Summers were spent in Abakee for family vacation every year. Charles taught countless generations to waterski and sail. He loved the water and making memories with his family. In later years Charles traveled, played a lot of golf and relished in being a PopPop, first to Joel then Ben, Sydney, Samantha, Aaron and Samuel. He loved telling the little ones stories and sharing the traditions of the Jewish Holidays and Simchas. He especially loved being a Great-Grandfather to Riley Grace. Charles leaves a legacy of hard work, love of Blue Crabs and joy of fine dining. We will miss him and always remember the twinkle in his blue eyes and his love of a fine cocktail.
