David Jay Gitter, May 6, 2020.
Life is evanescent; kindness is lasting; love is eternal. David Jay Gitter, you are not gone. You live on, having touched the hearts of everyone you met with your warmth and sweet grace. Father, pop-pop, husband, brother. There will never be another quite like you. You were a great man because you were a good man, a kind man, a noble man. But you were so much more. God blessed you with indifference to pettiness and aversion to spite. You were unencumbered by the need to critique, and you blessed those around you with limitless generosity born of an infinite desire for decency. In a cynical world, you were unflinchingly polite, and owned your individuality not with righteous pride but with quiet humility. The man with a hat for every occasion, travel-worn passport from exotic locations. Buckets of hard shells with your silver-dollar buckles. You tickled the drums, delighted in dim sum, spun foreign phrases and said hi to strangers. Your kindness was your truth, unconditional and pure. Your gentle heart was an example for all. You are truly the most special person we have ever known. In the lasting words of your grandson to his pop-pop, echoing solemnly on all of our lips, "I love you." You are missed, now and forever.
