David Samuel, October 12, 2026 of Ambler, PA.
Born in Philadelphia on May 26, 1952, to Richard and Bertha Mandel, David was raised in Havertown and went on to attend Villanova University, where he earned both his undergraduate and law degrees.
In 1971, at 19, David was set up on a blind date with Barbara, also 19 and from nearby Lower Merion. The two were born just three days apart and they married in June of 1974 , and began building a life together.
While attending law school, David faced the first of many health challenges when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. With determination and Barbara’s support, he completed law school without delay.
David and Barbara settled in Lafayette Hill, where they raised their three sons, Jason, Marc, and Matthew. His family was his greatest passion. He loved coaching his boys’ teams and spending summer vacations together in Long Beach Island, Myrtle Beach, and eventually Margate.
A devoted Philadelphia sports fan, David’s connection to the Eagles dated back to 1967, when his father first purchased season tickets at Franklin Field. He remained a season ticket holder and lived and died with the Phillies every night. Golf became another lifelong passion. David joined White Manor Country Club in the early 1980s and remained a member for nearly 40 years. He treasured the club and the friendships he formed there, and passed his love of the game on to his sons. He also loved playing cards and was a proud member of the Tuesday Night Card Game in Lafayette Hill for many years.
David practiced law for nearly 50 years. He joined Astor Weiss in 1979, building a career in real estate and corporate law that spanned 47 years with the firm, which eventually became Astor Weiss Kaplan & Mandel. For the past 23 years, he served as managing partner.
David was always the first to help when friends or family were in need. He was fiercely loyal, a quality reflected in his 53-year marriage to Barbara, his lifelong friendships, and his decades of stewardship at the firm.
Thirteen years ago, David became a grandfather, a role he cherished. He rarely missed his grandchildren’s events and routinely attended multiple games in a single day. Being there for them was one of his greatest joys. Despite numerous major health challenges over the past six years, David never complained. He faced each with courage and quiet resolve, always putting on a brave face for those he loved.
David was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Bertha Mandel. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Barbara; his brother, Ken; his sons, Jason, Marc (Rachel), and Matthew (Laura); and his four cherished grandchildren, Audrey, Rory, Josh, and Miles.
Donations in David’s memory may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (breakthrought1d.org), or a charity of your choice.
Relatives and friends are invited to services, Thursday, October 15, at 1:00pm at Joseph Levine & Sons. Interment will be held at Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will return to the residence of Mr. & Mrs. Matthew Mandel following internment and gather at Barbara’s residence on Friday evening from 5:00pm-8:00pm.
