After a lengthy illness, Dr. David J. Shingles passed away peacefully Tuesday morning at the age of 79. He met his illness with the same strength and wit he brought to every endeavor. In a career spanning 42 years, Dr. Shingles introduced urgent care to the Lehigh Valley with the Cedar Crest and Airport Road EmergiCenters and was a pioneer in the delivery of ambulatory care. A proud graduate of Union University College of Pharmacy ('67) and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine ('75), he was singularly devoted to his practice and to his patients, and was honored to care for so many. He was also a proud recipient of the Governor's Award for his service to the Pennsylvania State Police Camp Cadet program. He is survived by his wife Sheila, his first great love and the person with whom he approached life hand in hand. A maverick, Sheila watched nervously as David flew planes and raced cars, and together they built a family and a business. David remained young at heart until the end, dancing to the Amish Outlaws and cheering at ice hockey games. Born in Ogdensburg, New York, he is the son of the late Leo and Rose Shingles and is predeceased by his brothers Jack and Stanley Shingles. He is survived by his three children Dr. Jonathan Shingles, Aaron Shingles and Laura Katz, and three grandchildren Luke Shingles, Rose Shingles and Jake Shingles, and several beloved nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in David's name to the Allentown Rescue Mission or the American Cancer Society. Services will be held Sunday, March 21 at 1 p.m. at Roosevelt Memorial Park Mausoleum. Those who cannot attend are welcome to join using Zoom, with the meeting ID 599 927 6905 and the password DJS.
