Dene Katzenberg Bernstein

BERNSTEIN
DENE KATZENBERG

100, died peacefully at her home in the Elkins Park House, on February 20, 2017. Born May 30, 1916, in Philadelphia to Carrie Pollack and Lucien Katzenberg, Dene attended the Oak Lane Country Day School, Simon Gratz High School, and the University of Pennsylvania. She lived all her life among her many cousins and girlhood friends. She was the loving wife for thirty-nine years of Edgar Bernstein, who died in 1975. A homemaker and philanthropist, she was active in Fellowship House and Farm, the Jewish Family and Children's Service, and the World Affairs Council. She made numerous anonymous benefactions including many gifts of college tuition and a fund to care for Jewish HIV-AIDS patients. Her great loves were her family, her country, Tripp Lake Camp, traveling the world, painting, antiques, reading, and laughing. She was a life-long patron of the orchestra, opera, theaters, and museums of Philadelphia. The character trait she most admired was "stick-to-itiveness."
The family is very grateful for the compassionate efforts of her longtime housekeeper Maria Pereira, her steadfast caregivers Beverly Brown, Tamika Whiting, Stacey Flowers, Stacey Scott, and the nurses of the Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Philadelphia.
Dene will be sorely missed by her sons Alan (JoAnne) Bernstein, Philip (Leslie) Bernstein, her daughter Barbara (Irv) Berger, and Momodou Darboe of the Gambia; by her grandchildren Zachary Bernstein (with Jeri King and Rikio King), Steven (Deborah) Bernstein; Kerry (Schuyler) Fauver, Michael (Alexis) Bernstein, Anne (Matthew) Costello, Solomon Berger (with Lorraine Scolari and Kayden Hesser), and Jeremy (Monica) Berger; her great-grand-children Hannah, Owen, and Jacob Bernstein, Philip, Oliver, and Leo Fauver, Madison and Brooke Bernstein, Bernard and Beau Costello, Lucien Berger. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, 12:30 P.M. at JOSEPH LEVINE AND SONS MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 4737 Street Rd., Feasterville-Trevose, PA 19053. Burial is private.
Memorial donations may be made to the Jewish Family and Children's Service, JFCS of Greater Philadelphia, 2100 Arch St., Phila., PA 19103 or to a charity of your choice.
