DOUGLAS, October 22, 2011 of Belmont Hills, Lower Merion. Dear Companion of Sherard Knight. Son of Richard and Patricia Shaps and the late Elizabeth (nee Semans) Eidelson. Brother of Jonathan (Ann) Shaps, Matthew Shaps, and the late Thomas Shaps. Douglas was a graduate of Boston University. He served as manager for Pier One and Comp USA Stores. More recently he was financial analyst for the Chester-Upland School District. He was a civil rights activist, working for equality and social justice for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. He was a long time member of the Philadelphia Steering of the Human Rights Campaign and served as the political chair of that organization, lobbying elected officials and candidates on issues of importance to the LGBT community. Later, he served as the co-chair of the HRC steering committee and was elected to the national HRC Board of Governors from 2006-2008. He was also the former Executive Director of Outfront, a political organization and PAC, representing issues of importance to Philadelphia's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. He has also worked as Director of Development and Public Relations for the AIDS Coalition of Southern New Jersey, Executive Director of the Montgomery County Democratic Committee, and Director of Operations for Thrift for AIDS.
