Etta Levy Friend

of Bala Cynwyd, PA

Etta Levy Friend, 94, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and teacher, passed away at her home in Bala Cynwyd, PA, on September 10, 2025.

Born on August 9, 1931, in Boston, Massachusetts, Etta grew up in the Roxbury neighborhood, surrounded by her cherished "aunties." She later moved to Queens, New York, where her father worked in Manhattan’s garment district on 7th Avenue.

Together with Jim Friend, her husband and love of her life for 69 years, Etta raised their family in Emerson, NJ, and later in Bala Cynwyd, PA. Desiring to pursue a new career once her children were school-age, Etta returned to school to earn her degree in education and went on to teach special needs teenagers. She formed a deep bond with her first class, welcoming them into her home and taking them on outings. Etta had a remarkable ability to connect with students facing significant emotional challenges and took immense pride in helping them find their voice.

Etta had a gift for conversation and a warmth that drew people to her. She was a loyal friend, a trusted confidante, and a fierce advocate—both for her loved ones and for herself. Independent, proud, and full of spirit, Etta had a good sense of humor and remained young at heart throughout her life.

She is survived by her two children, Amy Friend (Tim Aluise) and Robert Friend (Cheryl), her four grandchildren, Dylan Aluise (Ellie), Jordan Hinke (Kyle), Rachel Friend, and Danielle Friend, and her four great-grandchildren, Luca and Robin Aluise, and Hayes and Callie Hinke.

A private service will be held by the family.
