Eugene Klein, 78, of West Chester, PA, passed on December 31, 2020, after a short but noble battle with brain cancer. He stayed himself until the end with his gentle spirit, generosity, and trademark humor. Gene was born October 2, 1942, to Esther and Morris Klein in Philadelphia, PA. After graduating from Northeast High School in 1960, he went on to study Music Education at Temple University undergraduate school and Indiana University graduate school. He taught music with the Philadelphia School District for one year before joining West Chester University in 1966 where he enjoyed a 37-year career. While at WCU Gene taught string music, served as Undergraduate Coordinator for the School of Music, and was awarded the honor of Professor Emeritus. Most importantly, he mentored thousands of students and made lifelong friendships with fellow faculty and staff. He loved hearing from past students who found success in their own careers thanks to his guidance and support. He spent over 30 years playing cello with the Delaware Symphony where he was proud to have shared the stage with a range of talented musicians, conductors, and friends. After retiring from WCU in 2003, he spent his time helping others and pursuing his passions. He could be found at the West Chester YMCA every morning swimming laps before attending one of his volunteer positions at the Chester County Hospital, Barclay Friends, or playing his cello for local hospice patients. He took pottery and Spanish classes, was a chamber music trio member, and played with the Orchestra Concordia. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Margaret Hulnick Klein; daughters Elizabeth Klein Ohsiek [George], Rebecca Klein Kerper [Phil] and Debbie Klein Ward [Matt]; sister Rosalyn Aberblatt; and grandchildren Sarah and George Ohsiek, Ryan, Cole, Charlie and Dean Kerper, and Maya and Henry Ward. Funeral services will be private. A memorial celebrating his life will take place later in 2021. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the West Chester University Wells School of Music Excellence Fund. Joseph Levine & Sons (
