Evelyn Katz (nee Mezey)

Evelyn Katz (nee Mezey) of Philadelphia, PA passed on October 17, 2023 at the age of 97.

We have lost in Evelyn an intellectually curious, passionate feminist before her time.  She was devoted to her children Sharon and Steve, embraced her daughters-in-law Jamie and Judith and adored her granddaughters Nicole and Carly.

Evelyn enjoyed literature, the arts, bridge, the 76ers and was a wonderful writer.  Nicole and Carly were the fortunate recipients of much of her written work, sent via her IPAD which she cherished and utilized with great technical skill.

After growing up in South Philadelphia, attending Temple University and marrying Cy, she had Sharon and Steve.  The family was raised in Bala Cynwyd.  Evelyn returned to Temple University when the children were young to obtain her Master’s Degree in Education.

Evelyn brightened the lives of her adolescent students as she brightened the lives of so many.  She taught them to read by getting to know them before they came to know the words.

After Cy died in 1983, Evelyn moved back into Philadelphia, eventually into The Philadelphian where she developed close friendships that she treasured.

We will miss her always.

Relatives and friends are invited to graveside services for Evelyn on Thursday October 19, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Montefiore Cemetery, 600 Church Road, Jenkintown PA 19046.
