Frederick Cohen, 71, of Bala Cynwyd, an attorney who was an expert in family law, died of cancer Tuesday at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood.
Since 1994, Mr. Cohen had been the chief support master for Montgomery County Court, advising the court on child support and other issues in divorce cases. He had been a member of the firm of Obermayer, Rebmann, Maxwell & Hippel in Philadelphia since 1996. Previously he was a partner with Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley in Philadelphia.
He was a continuing legal education lecturer in family law and was past chairman of the family law section of the Pennsylvania Bar Association.
Mr. Cohen was listed in the reference guide The Best Lawyers in America, and was named as one of Pennsylvania's "super lawyers" in Philadelphia Magazine and Law & Politics magazine.
A graduate of Overbrook High School, he earned a bachelor's degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and then earned a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
He was a member of Congregation Mikveh Israel in Center City and was a member and served on the board of Har Zion Temple in Penn Valley.
Since 1969, he had been married to Danièle Bivas Cohen, a native of France. They met on a blind date when she was visiting the United States. He proposed 16 days later, she said, and they were married in three months.
He enjoyed playing tennis, traveling, and spending time with his family at the Jersey Shore.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Cohen is survived by sons Seth and Philip.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Har Zion Temple, 1500 Hagys Ford Rd., Penn Valley. Burial is in Mount Sharon Cemetery, Springfield, Delaware County.
