Frumi Cohen

Frumi Cohen was born to Gertrude and Jerry Cohen. She and her three younger sisters were raised in Havertown, Pennsylvania.

A lifelong lover of music, Frumi graduated from Temple University’s College of Music, where she majored in classical guitar. After graduating, she discovered a passion for teaching. For more than 40 years, Frumi taught elementary music at Green Street Friends School and Plymouth Meeting Friends School, where she inspired generations of students with her creativity and warmth. Each year, she wrote and directed original musical productions performed by her students, and her works were later staged at schools and theaters across the country. Her dedication and artistry earned her an Pennsylvania Council of the Arts grant and several national playwriting awards. Frumi also taught private piano and guitar lessons throughout her life and volunteered to teach English VITA adult learners.

In addition to teaching, Frumi was a gifted songwriter and performer. She wrote beautiful original ballads and performed at local venues, including The Main Point—the same coffeehouse that hosted some of her musical idols. One of her original plays, A Show of Hands, was even performed off-Broadway.

As much as Frumi loved to teach and create, she also loved to learn. After retiring, she turned her artistic eye toward photography and painting, quickly excelling at both. She approached every hobby with total commitment, once even falling into a jetty crevasse while trying to capture the perfect photograph, breaking ribs and puncturing a lung in the process. She later joked that it was “all worth it.” Her nature photography and paintings received much acclaim. Frumi also loved hiking, birdwatching,and spending time outdoors.

In 2014, Frumi married her longtime partner of 20 years, Noa Kuzma. Together they shared a deep love of nature and spent much of their time hiking and birdwatching. Frumi was a devoted and very cool aunt to her many nieces and nephews, and a loving mom to her cherished dogs and cats.

Frumi will be deeply missed by her spouse , Noa Kuzma; her sisters Susan Cohen Dickler (Jan), Linda Gordon (Dan), and Holly Licht (Phil); her nieces and nephews Drew Dickler (Lily), Sydney Cohen (Dan), Leila Gordon, Spencer Dickler (Nanci), Henry Licht, Alison Licht, and Sophie Gordon (Regan Charie);

And Noa’s cousins Kathy Quick (David), Jack Judge (Donna), Kevin Judge (Joyce) and all the ‘little cousins’ and by countless friends, colleagues, and students whose lives she touched with her creativity, warmth, and humor.

Frumi’s legacy lives on in her music, her art, her students, and the love she shared with everyone around her.
