Gilbert Leonard, August 15, 2010 of Philadelphia. Faithful son of the late Anna and Jacob Markovitz. Beloved father of Julie and Laurie, grandfather of Doriana, brother to Lillian and Sol, and the late Frank, Eva Goldberg, Clara Reiss, Mina Brookman, and Ruth Kessler. Former husband and friend to Judy and Marlene, was dearly loved and will be mourned deeply by his sister, daughters, nieces, nephews, godson and many long time friends, including Theresa Lee. Those who were close to him as well as many others who knew him received great inspiration and wisdom from him. His entrepreneurial spirit and generous nature were admired by many.
Gil grew up in South Phila and was the next to the youngest of 8 children. Due to the untimely death of his father, Gil at the age of 15 helped to support the family. He worked in order to provide financial security for the family and managed to graduate from high school simultaneously. He was also on the debating team of the Boc Vocational School and he won the most outstanding debater award for the City of Phila. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve, created a retail record business in the 50's. In the 60's he created, ran, and franchised the 27 location retail chain, Tire Kingdom in the Phila area. Gil was an antique car enthusiast and collected numerous cars over the years. In the most recent years he operated his retail store R Tires R 4 U. He was active in the Big Brothers organization. In his later years, he traveled extensively with his "Amigos" friends and his former wife, Judy. Relatives and friends are invited to Services, Wednesday 12 Noon, JOSEPH LEVINE AND SONS MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 4737 Street Rd, Trevose. Interment at Mt. Sharon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to the Jewish National Fund.
