EINBENDER
GLORIA
Died on November 24 at home surrounded by her family. She is survived by her five daughters, Lynne, Susan, Patricia, Alysse and Jill, and her ten grandchildren, who have been with her constantly since she became ill in late September. Gloria Gertrude Sagand was born on April 12, 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri. When she was twenty years old, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in fashion illustration. Within a few months, Edwin Einbender, her long time beau from St. Joseph, Missouri and her future husband, followed her there. Once reunited in New York, they eloped. During the first year of marriage, they moved to St. Joseph where they had their first child. In 1964 a business opportunity brought the family to the Philadelphia area and soon after, Edwin founded the Honeybee clothing stores. Gloria worked alongside him as an accessory buyer and advisor as they grew the business from one store to 14 stores over a period of 20 years. They pioneered a fashion catalogue that won accolades from the women's fashion industry and made Honeybee a household name in many states. They had an incredible partnership in life and in business that brought out the best of their creativity. In the late 1970's they moved back to New York City where they had started their lives together. Gloria and Edwin were inspired by the arts throughout their lives together. They loved the ballet, symphony, theater, and visual arts and passed on this appreciation to their children. Gloria was a voracious reader and read the entire oeuvre of many of the authors she loved. She read two newspapers daily, passionately following current events. Gloria was widowed in 1987 and lived independently until she became ill. During these three decades she traveled extensively and started a collection of outsider art, often buying the pieces from the artists who lived in the rural South. A Memorial Service is scheduled at Congregation Rodeph Shalom, 610 North Broad St., on Sunday, January 14, 2018, 1:30 to 2:30 P.M., with a reception to follow. The family will be sitting shiva at Gloria's residence on Sunday and Monday, November 26-27, 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Gloria's memory should be made to Doctors Without Borders, an organization Gloria supported for many years.
