Grace Lewis (1927-2026)

Grace Natalie (nee Ehrensal) Lewis passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026 at the age of 98 surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in New York City and raised in Washington Heights, Grace was the youngest of four children, following her beloved siblings Leah, Larry, and Mike. Bright, independent, and intellectually curious from an early age, she entered City College at sixteen years old and later earned her teaching degree while attending Fairleigh Dickinson University at night.

Grace loved New York City and carried that love throughout her life. She was an avid reader with a lifelong interest in politics, history, music, and culture. She especially loved going to the ballet and classical concerts and taking her children, Anne and Ken, to Leonard Bernstein’s Young People's Concerts at Lincoln Center.

After the loss of her mother in her twenties, Grace continued building an independent life in New York City at a time when it was uncommon for young single women to live on their own. She eventually met and married the love of her life, Thomas Lewis.

Grace and Tom began their married life on the Upper West Side of Manhattan before moving to Washington Township (Bergen County), New Jersey, where they raised their family and lived for twenty‑five years. Grace was the primary caretaker for Tom when he developed Alzheimer’s Disease.

Just prior to Tom's passing, Grace moved to the Philadelphia area to be closer to her daughter Anne. She loved her years in Bryn Mawr, especially working in the Office of the President at Bryn Mawr College, and living in a walkable community near the library, shops, and neighborhood stores that reminded her of the city life she always cherished.

Grace remained deeply devoted to her family throughout her life and especially treasured time with her children, grandchildren, great‑grandchild, nieces, and extended family. She was particularly close to her beloved nieces Nancy and Judy.

In her memoir, Grace reflected on her life with characteristic gratitude, writing: "I married a wonderful man who brought me much happiness; I have wonderful children who have given me much joy; and you have blessed me further by marrying good people and giving me the best grandchildren ever."

Grace will be remembered for living up to her name in every way, with elegance, gentleness, dignity, kindness, and deep thoughtfulness toward others.

Grace is survived by her daughter Anne Rosenberg (Richard) and their children Emily Elman (David) and Abigail, her son Kenneth (Nancy) and their children Thomas and Allison, and her great‑granddaughter Talia.

Grace will be missed not only by her children and grandchildren, but by her nieces, nephews, and the wonderful staff at The Hearth at Drexel, who loved and cared for her, especially during this very difficult last year, as if she were family.

Family and friends are invited to a Graveside Service on June 1, 2026 at 1:00pm at Haym Salomon Memorial Park, 200 Moores Rd, Frazer, PA. Everyone is also invited to join the family at the home of Anne and Rich Rosenberg on June 1st from 3pm-6pm, and to sit shiva at the home of Ken and Nancy Lewis on June 2nd from 2pm-4pm and from 6pm-9pm.
