Hack R. Chung, M.D., a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died on August 3, 2025 at his home in Ambler, Pennsylvania. He was 88 years old. Dr. Chung is survived by his wife, Hanhee (Yu), his sons Mike and John, his daughter-in-law Mina Kim, his grandchildren Eleanor and Jeremy, his stepchildren Saehui Kim, Seung H. Kim and his wife, Eun Ju Lee, and his step-grandchildren Gabrielle Kim and Aden Kim. Dr. Chung was a devoted brother and brother-in-law to Maya Yoo (Chung) and her husband, Dr. Doo Yul Yoo; Won Ryang and his wife, Woon Sook (Paik); Cha Ryang and his wife, Shin Hee (Kang); Mun Ryang and his wife, Eun Ja (Lee); and Dae Ryang and his wife, Shin Joo (Kang). He was a loving Uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Dr. Chung is also survived by his former wife, Kyung Sun Chung (Park), mother of John and Mike.

Dr. Chung was born in Jeonju, South Korea on July 23, 1937. He was raised by his mother, Hyun Kyung Lee, and his father, Chin Hong Chung, who was the Principal of the Jeonju Girls High School. Dr. Chung graduated from Seoul National University (Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, Master of Public Health) and earned his M.D. from the Yonsei University College of Medicine. Dr. Chung immigrated to the United States in 1966 and began his medical career in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania as an intern in emergency medicine. He later completed a residency in psychiatry and established his practice at the Northwestern Institute of Psychiatry (now the Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital) in Fort Washington, PA. Dr. Chung was a dedicated physician for over 50 years and was especially passionate about his community service work at the Philip Jaisohn (Dr. Jae-Pil Seo) Memorial Foundation in Philadelphia, where he served as Chairman of the Board from 2003-2006. He was a life-time learner and mentor and was an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Chung always believed in the importance of public service, and he was a pillar in the community. He served as the President of the Korean American Association of Greater Philadelphia, when the Asian American community was beginning to develop its civic voice. He was a member of the Board of Trustees at Germantown Academy.

Dr. Chung taught himself to ski at the age of 38 and was an avid golfer and angler. He cherished his time with family and friends in the mountains, on the water, and on the fairway.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Dr. Chung’s life at a Viewing on Tuesday, August 5, at 7:00 p.m. at Joseph Levine & Sons, 1002 West Skippack Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Angels Church, 7000 Old York Road, Philadelphia, PA 19126.
