West Chester – Harvey T. Marion, 86, passed away unexpectedly on July 17, 2019, of complications from fighting lymphoma at Paoli Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Marion; his daughters: Deborah of Natick, MA; Susan Marion, along with her husband Jeff Miller of Denver, CO; Leora of Coatesville, PA; grandchildren Kenny, Danny, Rachel, Ida; and many close friends.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, he was a son of Edward and Sarah Marion and youngest brother of William and Norman Marion, both deceased.
Harvey graduated Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, class of ’50. He enlisted with the United States Navy and served from 1953-55. From his days in the Navy forward, Harvey discovered the wonder and thrill of flight, a hobby he would share with his family and other aviators. Following his Navy service, Harvey attended New York University, class of ’57, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
Following college, he joined Douglas Aircraft, working on the Nike missile program. Harvey then joined General Electric in Pennsylvania as a program engineer. Harvey made valuable contributions to the success of America’s first NASA weather-and-Earth-observations satellite program, Nimbus, a career highlight of his time at GE. Harvey left GE in 1970 to become an entrepreneur and opened the Valley Forge Camping Center in Malvern. His desire was to “make people happy” by supplying campers and outdoorspeople with camping supplies from tent trailers to motor homes. Harvey then worked for Buell Environmental, soon acquired by General Electric, and served as a GE Systems Engineer until his retirement in 1993.
During retirement, Harvey enjoyed spending time with family and friends, travel, competitive shuffleboard, and carpentry projects. A sense of humor and the sharing of life’s joys were always vital aspects of his life.
A brief military burial ceremony will be held promptly at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, July 24, at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA 18940. Following the burial, a memorial service and celebration of Harvey’s life will begin at 12:15 PM at Hershey’s Mill Golf Club, 401 Chandler Drive, West Chester, PA 19380. A light luncheon and sharing of memories will follow the service.
Because of road construction at Hershey’s Mill, attendees of the memorial service are advised to enter via the Greenhill Road main entrance and request specific directions to the Marion Memorial Service. Family requests in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Harvey T. Marion to Mazon – a Jewish Response to Hunger, or to the American Heart Association.
