Howard Stanley Lubin, DO October 5, 1929 - June 9, 2020. Our dear, much loved husband, father, and grandfather, respected and dedicated doctor, cherished uncle, and loyal friend passed away on June 9, 2020 in Devon, PA.
Howard was born on October 5, 1929 in Newark, NJ to Bessie Sinoway and Louis Lubin. He was their youngest child, joining older brother Ben and sister Leona.
Howard was naturally curious and valued education. He attended Newark public schools before he enrolled in New York University at 16 years old where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1950 and completed master's classes in English in 1951. Howard pursued his dream of becoming a doctor at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in 1955. He became a solo Family Medicine practitioner, a career that brought him endless purpose, joy, and fulfillment for 56 years in Upper Darby and Havertown, PA.
A true innovator for his time, Howard explored and practiced alternative treatments. He was sought after as a doctor of osteopathic manipulative therapy and acupuncture techniques for pain and medical management as well as hypnosis for labor and delivery long before these were adopted as mainstream treatments.
Howard was a mentor to PCOM students, a clinical instructor for the Family Medicine residents at Bryn Mawr Hospital and the Hahnemann University Physician Assistant program. His approach to teaching stressed treating every patient with dignity. He demonstrated the same kind and gentle approach to diagnosis and healing.
Howard was also one of the original founders of the Delaware County Memorial Hospital, a past president of Haverford Hospital, and on staff at Bryn Mawr and Lankenau Hospitals for more than 40 years. Howard earned the recognition of many community awards. He was also very proud to be the Police Surgeon for Marple Newtown Township Police Department and team physician for the Marple Newtown High School football team.
Physically strong and active throughout his life, Howard was called the "Iron Man" by his family. He was passionate about sports and invested much of his leisure time horseback riding, swimming, playing handball, bowling, exercising, downhill skiing, and rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles.
In addition, Howard was a lover of the arts. His love of Classical music started in college and was a constant presence in his office and home throughout the years. Howard studied at the Barnes Foundation for ten years and subscribed to the Metropolitan Opera, Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. At home, pets were an important part of his family life. Howard bred Schnauzers and Himalayan cats in his early adulthood. He enjoyed caring for his horses, dogs, cats, and even a turtle and a parrot during his lifetime. He was also an enthusiastic gardener and especially loved caring for his beloved orchids.
He is survived by his loving wife Maria; devoted daughter Elisabeth; sons David, Edwin, and Daniel; step-daughter Jane; two step-sons Bradford and Andrew; and 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by nephews Adam and Seth Kaufman and Todd and Craig Lubin and their children as well as an extended family.
Always on a quest to heal, to nurture, to enjoy the beautiful in life, but most of all he delighted in the loving relationships with his family. Howard blessed us all with his warm and dazzling smile and his famous cowboy boots!
The family is planning a memorial gathering next Spring to honor Howard's life.
