Jackie Pack (nee Batt) Segal

d. October 28, 2023

Jackie passed away peacefully on October 28th. She was predeceased by her parents, Samuel and Leah Batt, her husband, Joseph Segal, her brothers, Bernie and Kalman Batt. She is survived by her son Brad Pack (Linda), daughter Lisa Kirschenbaum (the late Michael ), grandchildren Elijah Miller (Jennifer), Jenna Dupre (George), Kira Pack (David), Alexander Pack (Michael), her sister Gaye Novack (the late Herbie), and brother Frank Batt (Carol) as well as many nieces and nephews and their children, all of whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by her dear partner David McGrain, and his daughters Anne and Beth.

Jackie was known all over Philadelphia for her beautiful voice, her indomitable spirit, and her generosity. Jackie’s six recordings of family, and yiddish music brought joy to many. Her children’s music soothed babies long into the night.

Music was Jackie’s life. She became a music therapist before there was a degree. She worked in PA, NJ, and DE with “Young Audiences” for ten years, educating teachers on how to utilize music as a learning tool. For two years she performed with Gloria Hayes and Puppet Horatio in a TV show that aired on KYW in Philly, called Horatio and Me. In 1964, Jackie was the first act at the Main Point’s opening night in Bryn Mawr featuring Phil Oches. Jackie was one of the first of many wonderful folk singers to become an integral part of the Philadelphia Folk Song Society and for years she was the coordinator of the volunteers at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and sang on the children’s stage at PFF.

In her later years, Jackie had many musician friends who got together monthly to sing. We will all miss her sign off of “shining light and blessings” surrounded by hand drawn music notes and telling us to “clothe yourself in light” before we traveled. We will miss her lilting voice and vibrant smile.

There will be a celebration of life at the Bala Golf Club (2200 Belmont Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19131) on Sunday November 12th, 2PM-4PM. All are welcome.

In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson's Foundation for Research,  http://www.michaeljfox.org, or the charity of your choice.
