Joseph Goldenberg

Joseph Goldenberg – October 26, 2026, of Blue Bell, Pa. Loving husband of Claire (née Beckman); cherished father of Susan (Alan) Price and Michael (Pattie) Goldenberg; proud grandfather of Brian, Nathan, Melissa (Luis), Drew, and Mitchell, and great-grandfather of Chase, Eli, and Laina.

Retiring as the winningest coach in Philadelphia high school basketball history, Joe taught physical education and health, and coached basketball at West Philadelphia High School for 21 seasons (1970–1990). He won 410 games, five consecutive Public League championships, and four consecutive City titles. He also coached in the first McDonald’s All American Game and other national all-star games. West Philly’s 1976–77 team went 31-0 and was ranked the No. 1 team in the nation.

Joe was also a West Philly alum and a star player, named to the 1955–56 Public League all-star team alongside teammate Ray Scott, Overbrook’s Wilt Chamberlain, and fellow Philadelphia legend Tee Parham. He went on to Temple, where he was a backup point guard to future Hall of Famer Guy Rodgers and helped the team reach the 1958 NCAA Final Four. He also started at second base for Temple’s baseball team.

From 1964 to 1983, Joe was director of Camp Twin Hills in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Of all his work in the classroom, on the court, and at camp, he was proudest of his impact on young people’s lives.

An avid and tournament-winning golfer, Joe regularly shot his age well into his 80s. He loved watching sports. He cherished time with his wife of 67 years, was a loyal friend to many, and was a devoted father. The coach who shaped the lives of so many young people was simply “Pop Pop” to his five grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, and he shared a special bond with each.
