Leah Bernice Unger (nee Goldstein)

A longtime resident of the Doylestown area, Leah Unger passed away peacefully on November 28, 2024, of natural causes in her home with her husband and children by her side. She was 96.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on November 18, 1928, Leah was the daughter of the late David and Tillie Sandberg Goldstein.

She will be missed and is survived by her beloved husband of 71 years, Victor Unger; her son, Fred Unger (Jacqui Ketner) of Providence, RI; her daughters Janet Unger of Leola, PA and Rachel Rando (Robert Rando) of Annandale, NJ and her four grandchildren who were the light of her life, Alex, Coby, Emma and Paul. She is also survived by her devoted brother, Samuel Goldstein.

Leah was a graduate of West Philadelphia High School and Temple University and taught as a kindergarten teacher in Philadelphia. She later went on to earn a Master’s Degree as a Reading Specialist and taught children who had difficulty with reading at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. She was passionate about helping students build both their reading skills and confidence. Leah was warmly recognized in the community by former students for many years after she stopped teaching.

Leah volunteered with the League of Women Voters, the Doylestown Library as a reading tutor, and with her synagogue. Leah was a voracious reader and appreciated being part of local book discussion groups. She always loved music, dance and going to concerts. Leah pursued a variety of adult education opportunities. Leah found joy and fulfillment as a mother. She experienced a new dimension of delight as Grammy to her grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am, Monday, December 2, 2024 at Kehilat HaNahar in New Hope. A luncheon will follow at the synagogue. Shiva will begin immediately after the luncheon and will continue on Tuesday from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at the Unger home in Doylestown.

Leah shared a loving relationship with each of her caregivers. The family would like to thank Pat, Desiree, Felicia, Noura and Terry for their unparalleled care and support.

Donations may be made to the Bucks County Free Library (buckslib.org) or any cause you think befitting of Leah’s memory. No flowers please.

Leah will be remembered for her loving kindness and free-spirited laugh.
