Louise Seltzer

SELTZER
LOUISE (nee Eisenstaedt)

Passed away peacefully Jan 15, 2018, age 101. Devoted wife of the late Ervin Seltzer; loving mother of Alex (Vicki Goff), Dan (Kate Kemple), and David (Lisa Roberts); adoring grandmother of Brian (Bari Goldberg), Molly, Jamie, Evan, and Susanna; beloved sister of the late Harry "Bud" Eisenstaedt. Born Nov 23, 1916, in Chicago, she was a quietly independent-minded person of rare inner strength and resilience, with a life-long support of social causes and education, and an enduring commitment to family and friends. She left Chicago to attend Sophie Newcombe College in New Orleans during the Great Depression, eventually getting her education degree from National Teacher's College (Evanston), and a graduate degree from Bank Street College of Education (NYC). A teaching position at Miquon School brought her to Philadelphia. She felt she had to support her country in war and volunteered with the Red Cross in WW2, attached to a field hospital, shipped out from England to Normandy 30 days after D-Day, and followed the army across Europe to the end of the war, withstanding enemy bombardment.
Returning home, she married and started her family. She was an active volunteer in the Cheltenham School District, obtained her Masters in Library Science from Drexel University, and then served as a fulltime librarian for several local elementary schools. After retiring, she volunteered at The Elkins Park Free Library, the University of Pennsylvania Museum, and the Academy of Natural Sciences. For many years, she enjoyed the Philadel-phia Orchestra and Opera, and Philadelphia's museums. She loved playing golf, tennis, bridge, traveling, and socializing with and entertaining family and friends. She lived a long life, embraced it with zest and gusto, and was a role model because of that.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Congregation Rodeph Shalom, 615 N. Broad Street, Phila., on Sunday, January 21st at 1 P.M. Condolences may be paid at her former residence later that day, from 5-7 P.M. Contribu-tions may be made in her memory to The Women's Center of Montgomery County, 8080 Old York Road, Suite 200, Elkins Park, PA 19027, or to the charity of your choice. The WCMC is an agency for the protection of abused women.
