Mark Mudrick

Mark Ira Mudrick passed away on the afternoon of July 10, 2026 at the age of 76. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, and was in so many ways “A Philly Guy.” Though he was often on the move with his wife, family, and friends, his life ended at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, back in the city he was proud to call home. Lung cancer ultimately took his life, but he died peacefully and with dignity, with Dr. Corey Langer having successfully directed his treatment for nearly a decade. He made the most of his years, and especially those final years.

Mark was the eldest of Gerson and Rosalie’s three children, and is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Marjorie, daughter and son Rae and Ross and their partners Matt and Maryam, grandchildren Emma, Jocelyn, and Ashton, sister Susan, brother Jay and his wife Fran, and countless cousins, in-laws, and friends. He felt deep pride in his children and grandchildren, and was always curious about and appreciative of the stories and perspectives, and especially the joys and triumphs, of the people around him.

Mark was a diligent student, thriving at Chester Elementary, William J. Cramp Elementary, Julia R. Masterman School, Central High, Temple University, Temple Law, and ultimately Georgetown University where he earned an LLM in International Taxation. He spent his career in international tax law at the IRS, Hercules, UNISYS, and Coopers & Lybrand, later PricewaterhouseCoopers. He also taught for several years at Temple Law. Though Mark was well-regarded for both his technical expertise and his mentorship of younger lawyers, his pursuit of the law was not a calling; he was fond of telling Rae and Ross that, “I knew I needed to provide a good living for my family, so it was either be a doctor or a lawyer. I didn’t like science enough to be a doctor, so I became a lawyer.” That marriage of practicality and the prioritization of his family was one of the defining characteristics of his life.

Mark took these obligations to his family and to the world seriously, but he did not take himself seriously. His interests and hobbies were activities that could be enjoyed with others, with a song on his lips and a dance to his step: Philadelphia sports and related conversation with friends or really anyone he encountered on the street (“Go Birds!” “Go Phils!”), the music of Frank Sinatra and the American songbook, long walks, good but not fussy meals, his famed Thanksgiving outpourings of gratitude that he could never get through without tears, cheering louder than the whole Vet 700s section at his kids’ and grandkids’ sports teams, and an endless string of kindnesses both large and small.

There are two phrases that defined Mark’s life: “Good ta see ya,” and “This is marvelous, just marvelous.”
