Martha (Fontek) Bernstein died on April 3, 2022, just four days after her 90th birthday. She was born in New York City to Eva and Louis Fontek on March 30, 1932.
She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Philip Bernstein, her son Jason, and her sister Edna Nirenberg. She is survived by her children Benjamin, Louis (Suzette), Emily (David), her brother James Fontek, and her grandchildren, Susanne, Jordan, and Joanna.
Early in her life she distinguished herself with many academic accomplishments. She was a graduate of Hunter High School in New York and Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Later, while raising four children and working full-time as a college instructor, she obtained a Masters in English from Rutgers University.
Martha taught English at Community College of Philadelphia for 30 years. A creative and dynamic lecturer, she would frequently incorporate material from contemporary comedians, artists, and writers into her curriculum.
There was nothing she enjoyed more than preparing feasts for family and friends to enjoy. She captivated everyone with her wit and sense of humor. She loved art, antiques, antiquing, poetry, and yearly trips to Italy. She couldn't pass up a good flea market. She remained an avid reader to the end of her life.
She will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her.
