Michael Freed

Michael J. Freed, 64, of Blue Bell, PA passed away on July 2, 2024 after fiercely battling kidney cancer over the last 21 years. Michael was born on May 25, 1960 to Carol (nee Koff) and Marvin J. Freed.

Growing up, Michael attended Nether-Providence High School and spent summers at Pine Forest Camp. He forged strong childhood friendships in grade school and at camp and remained close with these friends throughout his entire life.

Michael graduated from Lafayette College in 1982 with a degree in business. He started his career as a salesperson in his grandfather's food brokerage company, Koff Associates. As his role grew, he helped take the company from a local Philadelphia broker to a leader in the Northeast when he was President and CEO of the expanded company, Summit Food Marketing. Michael was a strategic, confident, and collaborative leader growing the business and earning the loyalty and trust of his longtime colleagues and clients.

Michael enjoyed retirement the last few years spending winters in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He could often be found perfecting his swing on the golf course, poaching on the tennis court, or dinking on the pickleball court.

Michael was a talented athlete, dedicated coach and avid sports fan. Growing up he played soccer and basketball, then he went on to coach his children’s and nephews' basketball teams. He taught his wife how to play tennis, which grew into a joint hobby of theirs as mixed doubles partners for many years. Until his final days, Michael rarely missed watching a Phillies, Sixers or Eagles game on TV, recounting plays and critiquing players with his dad, son and friends.

Michael was a supportive and loving husband, proud dad and “Pop-Pop”, devoted son and brother, and a true friend to many. He will be remembered for his kind-hearted and thoughtful nature, his competitive spirit, his calm demeanor and his ability to focus on the important things in life (as he would say). He proudly and thankfully outlived his diagnosis by many, many years, supported by the love of family and friends.

Michael is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lori, his children Jocelyn (Taylor) and Jordan (Sabina), his grandsons Mason and Lane, his father Marvin, and his sisters Diane (Paul) and Sharon (Rick), as well as his in-laws, and many nieces, nephews, friends and former colleagues. He is preceded in death by his mother, Carol.

While our hearts ache, we take immense comfort in knowing he is no longer suffering. In Michael’s final thoughts, he shared his love for his family.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service on Friday, July 5, 12:00 noon at Joseph Levine & Sons, 1002 W. Skippack Pike, Blue Bell, PA.
