Miriam Zevin Brillman

BRILLMAN

Miriam "Mitzi" Zevin Brillman, passed away on September 22, 2016 after a short illness. Miriam was born on March 15 1926 in Strawberry Mansion, Philadelphia. Her mother died after a long illness when Miriam was 10, but she had her devoted older sister, Ruth, and extended family to support her. She grew up living over her father's pharmacy and worked there as well. Miriam graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and then became a social worker. It was in the pharmacy that she met her husband, Nathan Brillman. Nathan came to work at Zevin's Pharmacy as a pharmacy student and married the boss' daughter.
Miriam, with her education, intelligence, and elan, polished up her diamond-in-the-rough husband. She fed the family on 80 dollars a month while Nathan attended medical school.
Miriam and Nathan had sixty-six joyous years of marriage. Miriam raised three children and contributed her efforts to many synagogue and philanthropic causes. She received a second BA in Jewish studies from Gratz College at the age of 58. She was a Torah reader until nearly the end of her life. Miriam never stopped learning and reading. She instilled her love of learning and her curiosity in her children and grandchildren. She and Nathan enjoyed traveling all over the world, opera, dining with their friends, and staying involved in the Jewish Community.
Miriam is survived by her children, David (Jack) Brillman and Heather Aronson, Susan and Larry Naftulin, Judith Brillman and Barton Wohl, and Mary Jane Cresswell Brillman; her nieces/nephews Barbara and Mark Sandler, Deborah Bunim and Haim Simon, and Elaine Slomovitz (Laura Michelle Kaplan); and her grandchildren Alexander, Laura, Daniel, Samantha, Madeline, Ruth, Chris, Eve, Devon, Andrew and David. She is also survived by numerous other family member and countless friends.
Miriam, we celebrate the long, loving, productive, meaningful life that you have lead. We love you and are devastated by your death. You were a class act all the way.
