Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Dec. 29, 2017 in her home at the age of 85 surrounded by family, after a long illness. Nina was born in Phila. in 1932 to Irwin and Betty Gassell. She attended Lower Merion High School and then Goucher College before marrying the love of her life, Billy Albert, in 1952. Nina completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania where she earned degrees in Sociology and Education. She later earned Master's Degrees from both Bryn Mawr School of Social Work and Villanova University.
In addition to raising three children, Nina had a rewarding career as a psychotherapist working with individuals, couples and families. She also interviewed Holocaust survivor families as part of a study on intergenerational trauma. Nina's philanthropy included being a Lion of Judah with Jewish Federation and a Board Member of the Miami City Ballet since 2013. An accomplished pianist herself, Nina experienced great joy in her many roles with the Curtis Institute of Music. She served on the Board of Trustees, 2005-2017, the Education and Student Life Committees, 2006-2016, and the Stokowski Committee, 2009-2014. She also served as an active member of the Curtis Friends Board, 2002-2008, serving as Chair 2005-2008, and as a Curtis Host, 2003-2013. Earlier this year, Nina was elected Trustee Emerita.
One of Nina's greatest pleasures was traveling the world with Billy. She was especially thrilled to celebrate her 80th Birthday in Israel with her entire family. Nina had a great love for the visual and performing arts, she was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing bridge, golf and tennis.
Nina was totally devoted to her family, friends and clients. She had enormous empathy and cared deeply about helping those in need.
Nina is survived by her loving husband, Billy, her children, Jim and wife Bette Ann, Dini and husband Michael, Pamela and husband Mike, and her six grandchildren who called her Nummy: Brittany, Remy, Sydney, Danny, Julian and Eliana, Also, lovingly remembered by her late daughter, Linda.
A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, December 31st at 10 A.M. at JOSEPH LEVINE AND SONS MEMORIAL CHAPELS (WEST), 2811 West Chester Pike, Broomall PA. 19008. The burial will follow at Haym Salomon Memorial Park, 200 Moores Rd., Malvern, PA 19355.
The family will sit shiva at the home of Nina and Billy Albert, 210 W. Rittenhouse Square, Phila., PA 19103 Sunday, December 31st following the burial. Monday, January 1st, 12-6:00 P.M. (mincha/ma'ariv at 4:30 P.M.)
Tuesday, January 2nd, 12-6:00 P.M. (mincha/ma'ariv at 4:30 P.M.). Contributions in Nina's memory may be made to the Infusion Unit at Jefferson's Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center.
