Paul Charles Atkins, 81, passed away on September 1, 2024, in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Born on September 27, 1942, in New York City, New York, he led a distinguished life as an academic physician.
Paul graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York City and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University in 1963, followed by an M.D. from New York Medical College in 1967. He completed his fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Pennsylvania in l972. From 1972 to 1974 he served in the Army Medical Corps in Tacoma, Washington.
Following his military service, Paul began his career at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Allergy and Immunology from 1974 until his retirement in 2007. He was dedicated to his patients and also found research and teaching rewarding and fulfilling.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Elaine Atkins; devoted children, Daniel Atkins (Michelle) and Jennifer Armstrong (Robert); grandchildren, Eve Atkins, Michael Atkins, Lena Armstrong, and Debby Armstrong; and brothers, Marc Atkins (Mary Lou Stewart) and Carl Atkins (Cindy). He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Suggs, and his parents, Michael and Leona Atkins.
In retirement, Paul spent a great deal of time with his children, their spouses and his four grandchildren. They and Elaine will cherish his memory.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Delaware Combined Campaign for Justice in Paul's honor online at Delawareccj.org. CCJ raises funds each year to provide operating support for Delaware's civil legal aid organizations.
An open house to celebrate Paul's life will be held by our family on Saturday Sept. 7 from 3:30pm - 6:30pm at 439 Midland Avenue, in Wayne. We are hoping to share stories at 5:30pm.
The funeral will be held at Levine's Funeral Home 4737 E. Street Road, Feasterville-Trevose, PA 19053– on Sunday Sept. 8 at 11:00 a.m. Those unable to join in person may view services via livestream at (https://www.levinefuneral.com/trevose-webcam.html). Burial will be at 2 p.m. at King Solomon Memorial Park in Clifton, NJ. We advise family and friends that the cemetery is just outside of New York City, quite a distance from the funeral home, and so no one is obligated or expected to join us there.
