Richard “Dick” Bookler, of Newtown Square, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, the 29th of April, 2026, at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous 18-year battle with multiple forms of cancer.
Born on March 21, 1939, in Philadelphia, Dick was the youngest child of Morton and Cecilia Bookler.
Dick was the devoted husband of his beloved wife, Phyllis, whom he met on a blind date in 1965. Together, they shared a remarkable 60 years of marriage, celebrating that milestone anniversary this past February. He was a loving father to his two sons, Bradley Bookler and Matthew Bookler (Michelle), and a proud grandfather to many adored pets.
After serving his country in the United States Coast Guard, Dick graduated from Temple University with a degree in marketing. He began his career helping to run Stylecraft, his family’s dress manufacturing business, before going on to own and operate several gas stations and car washes.
In 1973, Dick reached a turning point in his life, choosing to prioritize time with his family over the pursuit of further business success. At just 33 years old, he stepped away from the traditional 9-to-5 life to play an active role in raising his sons, while skillfully managing investments that allowed his family to live comfortably.
Dick’s presence was felt throughout his community. He coached nearly every sports team his sons played on, served as PTA treasurer, chaperoned countless school field trips, and was a founding member of Newtown Square’s Neighborhood Watch program—earning him the affectionate nickname, “The Mayor of Patterson Place.”
Known for his sharp sense of humor and his passion for cars, Dick could often be seen driving through town in his beloved 1967 Corvette. He also curated an impressive collection of nearly 500 scale model cars, proudly displayed in his den.
Above all, Dick was fiercely loyal to his family and friends. Whether lending a hand, picking up the mail, or feeding your cat, he was always there for those he cared about.
Relatives and friends are invited to graveside services, Friday, May 1, 2026, 11:00 am at Haym Salomon Memorial Park in Frazer, PA. Following the funeral service, all are invited back to the late residence. Shiva will be on Friday only. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dick's memory may be made to Blood Cancer United or a charity of the donor's choosing.
