Ruth Brand

On Sunday January 28, 2024, Ruth Brand (nee Bachenheimer), age 99, of Audubon, PA. 

Born in Wetter, Germany; Ruth spent her childhood there eventually growing up under Nazi rule.  In 1938 at the age of 13, Ruth and her family emigrated to New York City and spent decades in the Upper West Side.   Ruth met her beloved husband Horst, were married in December 1944, on an Army base in Tennessee.

 She helped in her brother Walter’s bakery, before attending Hunter College, where she became a Social Worker, they then moved to Bethesda, Maryland. Ruth gave birth to her daughter, Miriam and to her son Michael who was disabled.  She lived over a decade until the end without her life partner. To her struggles she responded only with strength, humor and truthfulness. She lives in our hearts forever. She was a mother, skilled home cook, avid reader, and lover of opera, classical music and gardening. She loved to walk and ride a bicycle.  Ruth was known for her hospitality, as well as her caring and concern for others.

She was the beloved wife of the late Horst Brand; mother of Miriam Brand Orenstein and the late Michael Brand; mother-in-law of Harry Orenstein; grandmother of Esther Sitrin, Deborah Harris (Jason Harris), Abigail Orenstein (David Ash); great-grandmother of Adalyn and Hazel Harris, Tessa Sitrin, and Neva and Noemie Ash.  A family graveside service will take place in Maryland.  Shiva will be observed at the residence of Miriam and Harry Orenstein.
