Seymour Shlomchik

Seymour Shlomchik, MD, son of Ida and Samuel Shlomchik, passed away suddenly on November 23, 2021 in Boca Raton, FL. Seymour (Sy) graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and then Jefferson Medical College. After a stint in the navy where he performed reconstructive surgery at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital during the Vietnam War, he was a solo orthopedic surgery practitioner in northeast Philadelphia for over thirty years. He was very dedicated to his patients and possessed great stamina and work ethic in taking care of them. He was a sought-after surgeon and clinician.

He was equally or even more dedicated to his family, and he cared deeply and personally about all of their activities. He was particularly close to his sons, Warren Shlomchik, MD and Mark Shlomchik, MD, PhD (both of Pittsburgh), who in turn are very close to each other both professionally and personally. Sy loved his sons and grandchildren, was proud of their achievements, and loved to talk about them. Sy had a strong sense of duty and was a fiercely loyal friend.

When not attending to his family and talking with his sons and grandchildren, Sy loved to play golf and cards (he was better at cards), as well as follow the Phillies on TV.

He met his wife Marlene on the beach in Atlantic City. Evidently it was love at first sight and they married in 1956. Sadly, she passed away of cancer in 1984. More recently he developed a wonderful relationship with his significant other, Kathee Schifman, of Boca Raton. The two were inseparable and always there for each other, keeping each other going, especially during COVID. Sy is survived by his sons and grandchildren Mariel, Matthew and Andrew Shlomchik. He will be greatly missed by his close friends and family.
