Stanley Martin Friedman, a distinguished architect, loving family patriarch, and adventurous spirit, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2024, at his home in Lansdale, PA, with his loving wife by his side. Born in 1931, in the Bronx, NY, Stanley's life was marked by both professional excellence and a profound sense of personal fulfillment.
Stanley is survived by his devoted wife and best friend, Lee Wexler Friedman, and his beloved children: Linda Komorowski (Jack), Bonnie Rapine (Mike Hunter), and Carol Friedman (Elliot Kalama). He was the cherished grandfather of Jason Komorowski (Kira), Travis Komorowski, Kelli Cannon, and the proud great-grandfather of Kassidy Komorowski, Jason "JJ" Komorowski, and Brody Cannon. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Helen Friedman, and his brother, Thomas B. Friedman, who is survived by his wife, Margie. Stanley was deeply influenced by his aunts, Francis and Mabel, who were integral parts of his upbringing.
Stanley grew up in Manhasset, NY, relished summers at the family vacation home in Amityville, and later moved with his family to Central Park, NY. Bright and athletic from an early age, Stanley graduated from the prestigious Washington Irving School for Boys in Tarrytown, NY, where he excelled in football and basketball. He went on to earn his Master’s deg ree in Architecture from his dream school, the University of Pennsylvania, and was a proud member of the Tau Delta Phi Fraternity.
From 1954 to 1956, Stanley served honorably in the U.S. Army, stationed in Honolulu, HI, in a public relations capacity. His commitment to service continued as he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Colorado Civil Air Patrol, serving as Squadron Commander, Incident Commander, Search Pilot, Ground Team Leader, and Instructor in Winter Mountain Safety. His love for community was evident through his dedicated volunteering for Colorado Search and Rescue, where he played a vital role in numerous missions.
As a distinguished architect, Stanley co-founded Evantash and Friedman in Philadelphia, PA, dedicating two decades to designing urban landscapes across the East. The firm was renowned for its design of hotels, office complexes, and shopping centers, including the notable King of Prussia Plaza. Later in his career, he moved to Boulder, CO, where he served as Colorado City Planner and shared his expertise as a respected lecturer at the University of Colorado, a role he held with great pride.
In his retirement, Stanley and his wife Lee embraced a nomadic lifestyle, embarking on extensive travels that took them to countries across the globe, including Egypt, Europe, Mexico, and Canada. Together, they explored all 50 U.S. states, traveling in tents, campers, trailers, and motor homes. This adventurous journey eventually led them to settle in Lansdale, PA, to be close to family. Stanley’s diverse interests and talents reflected his vibrant approach to life. He was a high-time flyer with a passion for piloting, having purchased and flown three different planes over his lifetime. His diverse passions and creativity found expression in photography, scuba diving, art, sculpture, biking, hiking, backpacking, skiing, fishing, golf, and carpentry, all of which he pursued with great enthusiasm and skill. A man of considerable intellect and opinion, Stanley was also an an avid follower of politics.
Stanley will be remembered for his brilliance, kindness, sensitivity, honesty, and occasionally stubborn yet always forgiving nature.
Stanley Martin Friedman’s life was a tapestry of remarkable achievements, vibrant experiences, and enduring impact. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Relatives and friends are invited to graveside services, Thursday, June 20, 2024, 9:30AM, at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Rd., Newtown, PA.
