Stephen L. Schwartz, MD

Stephen L. Schwartz, MD, October 15, 2026, of Warminster, PA; beloved husband of Miriam (nee Abeloff); devoted father of Stuart Schwartz (Abby), Daniel J. Schwartz (Robin) and Joel Schwartz; adoring grandfather of Samantha, Sabrina, Jacob, Devon, Graham and Zachary Schwartz; cherished brother of Shelly Rosen (the late Martin).

Dr. Schwartz was born and raised in Philadelphia. A proud graduate of Central High School, he received his undergraduate degree from Temple University and his medical degree from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. After serving an internship year at Queen's Hospital in Honolulu, he completed a residency in Psychiatry at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

After serving his country as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Schwartz returned to Philadelphia, joining the Department of Psychiatry at Hahnemann Hospital, before leaving in 1976 to become the Medical Director of the Northwestern Institute of Psychiatry (now Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital). He was most proud of becoming  a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Thomas Jefferson University in 1986, eventually reaching the level of clinical professor, where he remained until his retirement in 2020.

Dr. Schwartz was very active in his community, having served many roles on executive boards for psychiatry and medicine, including past president of the Philadelphia County Medical Society and the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Association, as well as a voting delegate to the American Medical Association and member of the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine.

Those who had the pleasure of interacting with Dr. Schwartz were struck by his uncanny ability for a well-timed humorous anecdote and enough jokes to perform a comedy routine at a formal event. Dr. Schwartz had a great love of history, opera, theater, Frank Sinatra, culinary experiences and, of course, as any proper Philadelphian, the Philadelphia Eagles; all of which would have been less meaningful without Miriam, his wife of nearly 65 years, along for the ride.

He and Miriam were extensive travelers, visiting over 50 countries during his lifetime. However, nothing brought him joy like the time spent with his grandchildren, who will deeply miss him.
