Stewart Melrose

Stewart Melrose of Philadelphia, PA passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on April 14, 2026, hours before what would have been his 84th birthday.

Stewart was the beloved husband of the late Sandi (nee Schwartz); loving father of Bonnie (William) Gold, Brian Melrose, and Amy Melrose; and cherished brother of the late Ronald “Ronnie” Melrose.

Son of the late Joseph Melrose and Mabel (nee Berger) Melrose, Stewart spent most of his life in Northeast Philadelphia, where he raised his three children. He was someone who felt great joy and pride in being a father. His kids, he would say, were his proudest accomplishments and the light in his life. He was married to his wife Sandi for nearly 52 years before she passed away in May of 2020. In addition to teaching and other jobs and creative pursuits over the years, Stewart enjoyed writing poems, cheer songs and slogans and was lovingly referred to as “The People’s Poet.” Stewart graduated from Temple University and Central High School.

Civic duty was something he felt strongly about, and for many years his home served as the local polling place. Stewart was a man with a big heart and a generous and outgoing personality. He was an avid fan of Jeopardy and Philadelphia sports teams, especially the Eagles and Phillies, and he loved wearing baseball hats from his favorite Philly teams. Stewart spent the last two and a half years at Brookside Healthcare in Abington, PA where he was cared for and adored by many.

A service will be held graveside on April 16, 2026 at 11:00 am at Montefiore Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to Jewish Family and Children's Services of Greater Philadelphia (www.jfcsphilly.org).
