Sylvan was a brilliant and loving individual, reserved in demeanor but devoted to his family and his profession of mathematics and computer science. After many years at the Frankford Arsenal, during which he also taught evening courses at Temple University, he taught at LaSalle University and briefly at Glassboro State College. In retirement, he audited a wide range of courses, from history to Russian, at his alma mater, Penn, and spent leisure time attending concerts with his wife, Bea, and traveling with her. He was always available to help with grandchildren, whether babysitting or chauffering them, using the opportunity to do math puzzles with them and discuss their interests. He was witty, loved practical jokes, and wrote biting ‘letters to the editor’ on issues of social justice and other topics. We hope to be worthy to carry on his legacy, while holding his memory in our hearts.
